Shaving vs. Waxing Your Bikini Line

Shaving Waxing your bikini line How to
Pros and Cons of waxing vs shaving your bikini line plus how to

Shaving is much quicker than waxing and is considerable less painful. Purchasing a wax kit will cost anywhere from $25 to $100. Having only a bikini line wax job will cost between $19 to $75 at a spa, a Brazilian will cost $100 plus gratitude. Shaving will cost $25 dollars the first time including razors, shave gel and moisturizer but you will get 10 to 15 sessions out of this so really it costs pennies each time.It is easy to make an appointment for a bikini wax, more difficult if you do it yourself compared to shaving which is really quite simple.

The results however can be quite significant if you have dark course hair. A good wax job may last up to six weeks because the hair is removed including the follicle. A good shave job may last only a day depending on how quickly your hair grows. Further, saving may leave a shadow because the hair is still under the skin compared to waxing which again removes the hair by the root, eliminating the shadow.

Waxing can cause bruising, bumps and ingrown hairs, however the risk is greater with shaving including potential razor burn. In both cases this risk can be reduced by taking the time to do the proper prep work.

Bikini Waxing- What to do before a bikini wax.

Bikini waxing lasts longer than shaving but to get a great job; you need to do some prep work.

  • To get an excellent job, you need to allow the hair in the area to be waxed to grow to about ¼” long to allow the wax to get a proper hold.
  • No tanning for a minimum of 48 hours before getting waxed. Tanning causes the skin to be tender and exfoliate quicker which could cause you to be extremely irritated after your waxing.
  • Make sure you make your waxing appointment when you are not on your cycle. Not only would it be uncomfortable for all parties if you were in the middle of your cycle but starting from 4 days before your cycle to 3 days after your cycle, your body is more sensitive. High degree of sensitivity means a higher degree of pain.
  • Exfoliating lightly will get rid of dead skin cells, give the area to be waxed a very gentle exfoliation every day for three days before your waxing appointment. This will help avoid ingrown hairs and ensure a smooth neat job.
  • Take an aspirin or Tylenol 30 minutes before the appointment to help soften the pain.
  • As for pain, just lie still, close you eyes and concentrate on breathing, it will be over very quickly.

How to Wax Your Bikini Line

  1. Before you start waxing your bikiniarea make sure you have all of the proper materials
    1. Waxing kit for bikini lines or Brazilian waxing kit
    2. Hard wax that does not need muslin strips is preferred
    3. Bikini trimming razor
    4. Sensitive skin moisturizer
    5. Baby oil
  2. Plan how much is going to come off, and what the final design will be.
  3. Take a shower to soften your skin and trim the area to be waxed to a length of about ¼ inch.
  4. Place a towel on your bed under your body. Your bed is the most comfortable place to complete the waxing process and the towel will catch and excess wax. Make sure you have a garbage can beside the bed for the used materials.
  5. Follow the instructions on the box, and heat the wax to the proper temperature and consistency. Make sure it is not too hot as you do not want to burn yourself.
  6. Use a popsicle stick to test the wax temperature on your wrist.
  7. To remove hair on the frontal area, lie on the bed with your feet over the edge and flat on the floor, place a pillow under your head so you can see what you are doing.
  8. Use the popsicle stick to apply the wax. You should apply the wax from the root of the hair to its tip and in the direction of the hair growth
  9. To remove the wax, simply grab the edge of the wax with you hand, while holding the skin down with the other. Pull in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Make sure you pull quickly so that the hair is pulled out by the roots or follicle. You will likely have some left over hairs. DO NOT APPPLY WAX TWICE TO THE SAME AREA, the skin will be very tender and you run a high risk if damaging your skin. Tweezing is the best answer to remove the last bit of hair. This may sound painful however immediately after waxing, the tweezing will seem minuscule.
  10. Apply baby oil to the waxed region, the baby oil will remove and residual wax and will sooth the skin. This is a good time for a shower to cleanse the area and apply unscented moisturizing cream.
  11. Two days after waxing, lightly exfoliating the skin will reduce the change of ingrown hairs.
  12. It is important to note that if you have numerous hairs left, you can either tweeze them or wait a few days before applying a second wax treatment.

Shaving Your Bikini Line

Before you start shaving your bikini line, you need to do some prep work to reduce the chance of razor burn, bumps or ingrown hairs.

Use the following steps to properly shave your bikini line reducing the risk of razor burn and ingrown hairs

How to correctly shave your bikini line
How to shave your bikini line, preperation, shaving, after care.

Preparation – If your pubic hair is longer than ¼ inch, you will need to cut it with a pair of scissors. Cut the hair as short as possible but no longer than ¼ of an inch.

After you have trimmed the hair to a manageable length you should wash the area and gently exfoliate with a mild facial exfoliate being careful not to get any on your delicate parts and rinse thoroughly.

Use new razors that are made for delicate skin and have multiple blades preferably with a lubricating strip and swivelling head for added protection.

Shaving – Rinse the area to be shaved with warm water and apply either shaving cream for sensitive skin or cream rinse which is just as nourishing for your skin.

I have read numerous articles telling you to shave in the direction of the hair growth to avoid irritation however doing so also does not seem to shave the hair and what hair it does shave will leave rough stubble. Carefully shaving against the hair growth with short gentle strokes and rinsing your razor after every stroke will complete the job leaving a smooth clean area.

How much you shave off is completely up to you and is a personal thing, Some women shave it all off, other women leave a so called landing strip, others only shave enough to hide behind their bikini line.

Finally add some Johnson’s baby powder to the shaved area, this will reduce irradiation and help with potential ingrown hairs by reducing the moisture content of the skin.

Razor burn happens to the best of us and always at the worst time. The best method to treat razor burn is prevention but if it is too late, take the following steps:

  • Do not shave for three of four days to allow the skin to heal, it that is absolutely not feasible, the shave only in the direction that the hair grows, do not shave against the hair as this will only cause further irritation.
  • Moisturize your skin two to three times a day with a fragrance free moisturizer or aloe-based creams. Do not use deodorant soaps as this will further dry your skin and cause increased irritation.
